Day 9

Woke up very early today because the class had to meet early to go to Wugang steel manufacturing plant. After getting our safety helmets, we headed off by bus!

It was a long trip to the place and we were briefed after reaching there.

We were told about the history of the company, how they were founded and how they expanded over the years. The person took us inside to view the manufacturing process of steel strips. Basically, wugang steel was actually a company that originated in Japan. The Japanese passed it on to the Chinese to facilitate the manufacturing process of steel. They thought that the company will not be able to make profits after several years. But 30 years passed and its still doing well. We headed in the factory after the briefing is done.

The entire process was rather fast. They told us about the regulations and we were not supposed to take photos inside.

At the start, there were many rollers being cooled by water. The rollers will pass a huge block of steel bar towards the end. Steel is heated at very high temperatures at the start in the form of large and huge bars. After which, they are flattened into a long and flat strip. The place there is very hot when the furnace opens. We could feel the heat at quite a far distance. Water will come out from the sides to cool the steel bar down because it is still very hot even after coming out of the furnace. It takes 1 minute for the processing of the steel bars into steel strips. The steel strips are then rolled using a machine. After that they’re really to be sent to the supplier! We took quite a number of photos at the end where the person brought us.

We went back to school and took a break until IS lesson. The lesson started off with the history of China. There were many different dynasties in China and most of them are familiar to me. We ended early. I feel that the lecturer is friendly as she asked us what we wanted to learn about China.

Reflection

Today was a tiring day. However, though it was tiring, i feel that it is quite interesting. Today for the steel factory visit, it is very link to my course. But it is a very small part. Today we are shown the manufacturing process of steel strips. The manufacturing process of steel strips is very fast. It takes one minute for the entire process to finish. Then after this process, it will move on from the manufacturer to the supplier. It will then move on to the final customer.
