Day 12

We had IS lesson today morning. Today we learned many new things about china. Let me review about the things I learnt today!

China is located in Southeast Asia and has an area of 9.6 million km square and a coastline of 18k km, over 1.3 billion people. The shape on the map is like a rooster. It is bordered by 14 countries, some of the countries include korea vietnam, laos, burma and India.

Let me move on to the rivers.

Firstly, the Yangtze river. It is the longest in china and third longest in the world. The yellow river is just behind the yantze and they both flow into the Pacific Ocean.

The yarlung zangbo river belongs to the indian ocean water system , and the irtysh river to the artic ocean.

For the regional divisions they are split into four regions. The north region, the south region, the north west region, and the qinghai tibetan areas.

The tourist attractions are wudang mountain, three gorges, shennogjia, chibi and jingzhou.

In Wuhan, it is known as one of the three furnaces of china. The Three Furnaces of China refers to the especially hot and oppresively humid summer weather in several major cities in China. The weather in Wuhan is very unpredictable. There will be times when it turns cold suddenly after a hot period.

Major industries include optic electronic, automobile manufacturing, steel manufacturing, new pharmaceutical sector, biology engineering, new materials industry and environmental protection

Lastly I will touch on the popular food in china

The food includes hot and dry noodles, duck neck bean pan, soup dumpling, saltly doughnut and wuchang fish.

Out of all this, I have eaten hot and dry noodles and soup dumpling. I’ll give a brief description of the these two dishes.

Firstly, hot and dry noodles.

Hot and dry noodles originated in China at around the 1930s. This is the origin of hot and dry noodles which I found in the web.

There was a person from Wuhan who made a living by selling bean noodles and noodles in soup. One day, worried that the noodles left over would go bad, he fished out the cooked noodles, spread them over the chopping board, and accidentally pushed down the sauce boat with sesame oil. As a result, the noodles were covered with the sesame oil. The next day, he scalded the almost cooked noodles in boiled water for a while, fished them out into a bowl, and mixed them with shallot and other condiments. The noodles turned out to be extremely tasty and savory. In this way, the man invented the hot dry noodles now well-known all over China by accident.

There are two sauces which can be put on hot and dry noodles. One is peanut sauce and another is sesame paste sauce. The one which I ate had peanut sauce. The smell of the sauce is very strong and it also tasted good.

For soup dumpling, it is also known as xiao long bao.

It tastes something like the dumplings we have in Singapore, just that its different in size and the flour skin is less crispy.

After IS lesson, we headed back to our rooms to rest.

Reflection

There was a very interesting thing that the IS teacher taught us today. She first asked, why is hubei called nine headed birds.

Firstly, we must know what nine headed bird means.

The nine-headed bird is one of the earliest forms of the Chinese Phoenix, worshiped by ancient natives in Hubei Province during the Warring State Period. The nine-headed bird was also called Nine Phoenix and was one of the most vastly worshiped mythical creatures throughout Chinese history. The number nine was thought to possess mysterious power in Chinese culture. Nine-headed bird was, and still is believed to be a symbol of wisdom and good fortune.

The people of Hubei are given the uncomplimentary nickname Nine Headed Birds by other Chinese, from a mythological creature said to be very aggressive and hard to kill. It comes from this phrase天上九头鸟,地上湖北佬. When translated to english, it is ‘Up in the skies lives the nine headed bird, when on earth lives the people of hubei.’
